The current tour of The Rocky Horror Show, parked up currently at the New Wimbledon Theatre and starring Jason Donovan as Frank-N-Furter, delivers an electrifying and unforgettable experience (as one might expect). Donovan brings a fresh yet classic take on the iconic character. It’s so often played by young(ish!) and sexy men (most famously Tim Curry in the 1975 movie, who had legs for days). But Donovan, whose looks have long faded, plays the alien entity as a kind of Norma Desmond figure — desperate to make a man; to not just worship and make love to, but to live vicariously through. I’d go as far as to say, this is how it should always have been played. Donovan’s performance is bold and engaging, injecting the show with both humour and a bit of menace that makes Frank-N-Furter even more intriguing.
The supporting cast shines just as brightly, with standout performances from the entire ensemble. Particular mention must go to the cast’s incredible vocals, especially during iconic numbers like “Time Warp” and “Sweet Transvestite”, which are met with enthusiastic audience participation. With musical director Josh Sood on keyboard, the live, five-piece band are also energetic and loud — as it should be. The chemistry between the characters, especially Brad (Connor Carson) and Janet (Lauren Chia), adds a layer of charm to the show’s wild energy too. Brad’s stiffness (pun intended) plays nicely against Janet’s girlish-then-devilish demeanours.
The set design (Hugh Durrant) and lighting (Nich Richings) are on point; with a vivid, almost psychedelic aesthetic that enhances the surreal experience of the show. The production values are high, making it a visually and sonically stunning event. Directed by Christopher Luscombe, the combination of slick staging and infectious music pulls the audience into the world of Rocky Horror without hesitation.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the show, Rocky Horror is always a must-see when it rolls into town. Jason Donovan’s Frank-N-Furter is a highlight, but the entire production is a celebration of everything that makes The Rocky Horror Show a beloved classic. Does it have the charm and darkness of the 1975 movie? No. But is it worth double the ticket price? Yes.
