PROM 57: FANTASY, MYTHS AND LEGENDS | London, Royal Albert Hall

Music for film, TV and video games is often excluded from the classical repertoire. But for this highly accessible Prom inspired by fantasy, myths and legends, the programme cleverly alternates popular hits from the 20th and 21st centuries with classics from the 19th century. Conducted by Anna-Maria Helsing, the BBC Concert Orchestra and Huddersfield Choral Society give us enough bombast to sharpen our vorpal blades, and enough magic to send our hearts soaring.

It’s the Proms debut for John Williams’ iconic ”Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace (1999), performed and sung with immense gusto. It’s also the Proms debut for Howard Shore’s score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001); but this slightly perfunctory arrangement (J. C. Whitney) will be disappointing for fans expecting the timeless magic of Shore’s original. It’s also the Proms debut for Ramin Djawadi’s score to Game of Thrones (2011), Joe Hisaishi’s score to My Neighbour Totoro (1988), and many others: all met with wild approval by the sold-out, 6000-capacity audience.

“Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) by John Williams has delighted Prommers before and does so again, though performed here at such a speed that it’s not always secure. Stravinsky’s The Firebird (1910), Mussorgsky’s A Night on Bare Mountain (1886) and Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Peer Gynt (1875) are perennial Proms favourites, all played with effortless aplomb by a well-rehearsed ensemble.

It’s all presided over by presenters Katie Derham and Ali Plumb, who are clearly just as big nerds as the rest of the audience. At times, it feels like the whole thing has been pitched to a much younger audience than the one actually watching live at the Royal Albert Hall. But for those watching on TV at home, it could work like a magic spell.

Tickets for all 71 Proms are available from just £8 on the BBC Proms 2023 website.
