Organist and TikTok star Anna Lapwood is no stranger to the dark. After office hours as the Director of Music in Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge, Lapwood is also an associate artist of the Royal Albert Hall. It’s here that she loves to practise at night time, after hours, on the “voice of Jupiter”, with its 9,999 pipes and extensive percussion section, including bells, mallets, and even a bass drum. A performer and presenter in demand all over the world, Lapwood finally gets her own Prom, and a chance to welcome a sold-out audience of 6,000 into her own music of the night.
Lapwood’s carefully curated programme of ten pieces centres around her transcriptions of three excerpts from Hans Zimmer’s organ score to Interstellar (2014). In particular, it was “Cornfield Chase” that catapulted Lapwood to half a million followers on TikTok in 2022, introducing a whole new audience to the majesty of the organ.
Other highlights include her ingenious transcription of Debussy’s “Clair de lune” (1905). Her programme also highlights women composers, including exhilarating An Elf on a Moonbeam by American cinema organist Florence Price, who went on to become the first Black woman to gain widespread recognition as a composer in the 1930s. Especially commissioned by the BBC, Olivia Belli’s new Limina Luminis builds and builds in an overwhelming cascade of sound.
In a move that could only happen at the BBC Proms, the concert is turned into a complete visual spectacular, with mesmerising, kinetic lighting design (David Bishop) and video programming (Adam Marshall), which turns the whole auditorium into a spaceship. So look out for that on TikTok.
Tickets for all 71 Proms are available from just £8 on the BBC Proms 2023 website.
