GIFFORDS CIRCUS: AVALON | London, Chiswick House and Gardens

Established in 2000 by Nell and Toti Gifford, Giffords Circus is known for going above and beyond the usual travelling circus fare, offering children of all ages live music, full scale theatrical production design, and world-class circus acts. Last year, we had “Les Enfants du Paradis”, a French cabaret theme. This year, it’s “Avalon”, themed around King Arthur and the Knights of Camelot.

As “Sir Lancelot” and “Lady Morgan le Fay”, brother-and-sister double act Dylan and Asia Medini offer us the core of the show’s spectacle. With an immediate bravado that smacks you right between the eyes, their world-renowned high speed roller-skating act leaves us dumbfounded: whirling around in all manner of contortions (including by a rope attached to the sister’s mouth?) on a tiny little plinth.

Since the Wild Animals in Circuses Act 2019, it’s unusual to see any circus in the UK showcasing live animals. Which makes Pat Clarisson and Pip Ashley’s prize-winning comedy dog-training act all the more special. It’s also delightful to get to see a little pony do some tricks, trained by “The Lady of Shallott” (Latoya Donnert).

With Giffords, you might be paying double the price compared with other circuses, but you get double the quality. The bespoke set and costumes by takis Design, plus the live six-piece led by musical director James Keay, really lift the production to another level. They even do a full, three-course, sit-down pre-show meal, or you can just grab a quick burger –– also high quality. Just make sure you book ahead, and get there early: this is the best circus in town.

Playing at Chiswick House and Gardens 6 – 23 June 2024, and touring the UK 10 May – 29 September 2024.
