FASCINATING AÏDA: THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW | London, Royal Festival Hall

Fascinating Aïda’s fortieth anniversary show is nothing short of spectacular. From the moment the curtain rises, we’re swept into an evening of sharp wit, biting satire, and impeccable musical talent. The trio of Adèle Anderson, Dillie Keane, and Liza Pulman are a force to be reckoned with, blending their razor-sharp humour and powerhouse vocals with perfect harmony.

The show is a masterclass in cabaret, effortlessly blending classic hits from their extensive catalogue with fresh, hilarious new material — including a classically-inspired song cycle that critiques all sorts: from Trump to Starmer, to the new twenty-miles-per-hour zones. As usual, the songs tackle everything from politics to personal relationships, each delivered with a mix of sharp commentary and infectious charm. Their voices are as powerful as ever, delivering both comedic punchlines and emotional depth; with Keane’s song of her former home a particular tear-jerker.

A true highlight of the evening is Adèle Anderson’s rendition of “Widows”, a showstopper that showcases her comedic timing, vocal range, and masterful storytelling. The song is a brilliant mix of humour and pathos, with Anderson’s sharp delivery transforming it into an unforgettable moment of character performance; the kind you’d expect from Victoria Wood.

What stands out the most, however, is the group’s ability to make you laugh and think at the same time. Their sharp wit and unapologetic approach to contemporary issues are incredibly refreshing. The chemistry between the performers is palpable too, and their interactions with the audience create a uniquely intimate, yet grand, theatrical experience. Keane’s ad-libs in particular keep the nights fresh, and give the audience what they paid for — sardonic put downs and witty repartee.

Directed and designed by Paul Foster and Daniel Carter-Brennan, the set is stylish and minimalist, allowing the focus to remain squarely on the trio’s talent and their ability to weave stories through song. The costumes are an eye-catching, glamorous touch that adds to the overall sense of celebration and extravagance. Sequins, anyone? YES. Plenty. And why not? It’s forty years.

For long-time fans, the fortieth anniversary show is a joyous trip down memory lane; and for newcomers, it’s a perfect introduction to the genius of Fascinating Aïda. If you’re looking for a night of laughter, dazzling talent, and social commentary, this is one show you can’t afford to miss. An unforgettable evening that proves why Fascinating Aïda remains one of the finest acts in the cabaret world. A new show beckons, they say… well; if that’s true, then go, go, go.

Playing at London’s Southbank Centre 2–5 January, 2025.
