The UK tour of Dear Evan Hansen, now playing at the New Wimbledon Theatre, is an emotionally resonant production which more than delivers for its eager audience members of middle-class couples, teenage groupies, and — of course — the socially awkward. The show follows Evan (Ryan Kopel), a socially anxious teenager, whose well-intended lie spirals out of control. Exploring loneliness, grief and connection, the story seems even more relevant now than when it first hit Broadway in 2016. Director Adam Penford ensures a well-paced production that balances humour and heartbreak, keeping the audience engaged throughout. But then, it does feel from the start like the company can really do no wrong?!
Ryan Kopel delivers a compelling performance as Evan, capturing both his awkwardness and longing for acceptance. His vocals shine and stun in equal measure in ‘Waving Through a Window’ and ‘For Forever’, delivering the sincerity and vulnerability the titanic role demands. Helen Anker and Alice Fearn stand out as the two mothers, both losing their sons in different ways. Their chemistry strengthens the storytelling, making each character’s journey impactful — and it’s great to see some proper acting in a a big commercial musical.
The score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul remains a highlight, with ‘You Will Be Found’ delivering a powerful emotional climax. The set (Morgan Large), featuring moving panels and digital screens, reflects themes of isolation and online identity, which are effective when they’re moving smoothly and not distracting. But it’s the musical’s book, by Steven Levenson, that wins the day. Winning the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical in 2017, it’s surely the best book from a modern musical for years — perhaps even a decade. It reignites the truism that a musical’s book may sometimes play second fiddle to music and lyrics; but without a good book, a show is simply no good. Whilst it’s the score that seems to have given Dear Evan Hansen its reputation, it is the book that surely gives it its heart.
Whether a longtime fan of the show or new to the story, this UK tour offers a heartfelt and thought-provoking night with bags of talent on stage. I can only imagine the producers hope, like me, that you will soon “be found” grabbing a seat to an excellent show.
Dear Evan Hansen is touring the UK, 9 September 2024 – 5 July 2025.
